Sage rides in Hawk's lap on the way to the island. This is our second trip in three weeks. The first trip was in a 26 foot UHaul truck, but we didn't get everything in. We are pulling a UHaul trailer with the rest. When we got to the island to unload, the trailer wouldn't back up. So annoying! We unloaded into the woods, took the trailer off to turn it around, re-loaded and finally got stuff into the garage. |
| It is so full that we can't empty the storage locker on the island into it. But we are unpacking it into the sleeping loft. | |
 | Here's how the not so little guest house looks now, it's 3/4ths sided and the interior upstairs is mostly done, just a few strips of trim to go. |
| We spent our first day on the island painting the sleeping loft. Taine sent us to San Juan Colors, where we bought missed matched paint for $5 per gallon. We got great colors! Bright Madrone red for a couple of walls, but a shade of ecru/chocolate for the rest of the walls and cieling. | |
 | And apricot for the bathroom, so sunny and sweet. Maybe we should redo the trim around the window (it's still not fully painted) in that bright madrone red. |
| We set up a makeshift kitchen on the wall opposite the bathroom. It has our microwave and our toaster/oven and we can use one of our two barbeque grills outsite, but no stove. So we can cook steak or lamb, but not bearnaise. We can cook salmon, but not blackberry sauce. I'm not complaining, though. Really. | |
 | Here's the ocean view from the sleeping loft of the guest house. |
| We got up at 4:30 this morning to catch the 6:00 ferry with our rental truck. The plan was to get all the appliances we scored at the Appliance Connection in Mt. Vernon and all the furniture/bathroom/kitchen stuff we needed from Ikea, plus the double chaise lounge from Pottery Barn. But we had to ditch the truck when we discovered it didn't have a trailer hitch -- we had to return the UHaul trailer today in Everett. But it turned out okay, we just got fewer things at Ikea, and picked up one of the three appliances instead of all three. The chaise is sitting on top of the car. AND -- we were the last car on the 3:10 ferry! So so lucky.

 | Behind Hawk in the picture above is a glimpse of our new painting. We just bought it on Wednesday at Waterworks Gallery, it's not really our view but it looks enough like it that we don't care. It's an oil painting, and we will bring it to Chicago to remind us of our heavenly spot here. |
| Didn't we find a beautiful spot for the Lutyens bench? It's a little scary to sit on the rock in front of it, so we should probably move it back a little, but it looks so fabulous there. And it's a great spot to sit and watch the sunsets over Vancouver Island. | |
 | On Sunday, Bob and Barbara stopped by around 2:00, and we all sat around the Lutyens bench. About 10 minutes after they sat down, a pod of killer whales swam by. It was amazing. One of them, a big male with a huge triangular fin, dove his head under, curved his tail underneath him, and flopped it into the water. It made a very loud noise, and he did it a bunch of times. Barbara thought he was fishing. Later that day, Paul and Nina and their children came for a barbeque. |
| Hawk cooked a salmon fillet that we got at the Friday Harbor farmers' market, and Paul and Nina brought salad, asparagus, and pound cake. | |
 | It was a really beautiful afternoon/evening, about 75 with no wind and that gorgeous golden glow in the sky. |
 | The whales came by again just before they got to our house, but as we were watching the sunset, they came back by, moving fast to the south. What a great show all day. It's as if they know we are their audience and how much we want to see them. Three displays in one day! And they were very very close the second time, when we DIDN'T have the camera. | |
