San Juan Island
December 26-January 13 2004
We spent $5,000 to get the empty pond into something (anything!) other than a rectangle. We got this fabulous new shape, and so much rain that the pond is too full!
After trying the siphon thing with the hose for 5 days, Hawk finally gives in and digs a teeny trench at one end of the pond. We need to get a foot of water outta there so we can see what the shape really is.
We had Kit and Lon over for dinner (oysters and pearls, champagne, salad)on New Year's Eve, then we all went to a Witsend Production at the fairgrounds. They were doing a 1940s radio show, cute but full of injokes we didn't get. So we left early and went home. The next day Suzy was sick all day (slept until 11 am) but Friday was better. Here is Hawk enjoying the grilled rack of lamb we had for dinner.

So we wanted a mantel for the fireplace after we finished adding wood strips all around and polishing up the copper. It was gorgeous, but too plain. So we went for a walk around the fields and saw a fabulous ancient fir 2X10, all gray and notched and covered with lichen. We pulled it down and brought it to the house and notched it, and used iron hooks that we just happened to have to hold it up. It is very beautiful, but it isn't quite right. It doesn't really go with the rest of the house, but we don't care.
Here are some new copper grasses: old Queen Anne's laces -- they form this funny funnel shaped clump, and then when you bring them inside, they open up to a skeleton version of the original flower.
Hawk and Lon watch Green Bay beat the SeaHawks.
We watched for awhile and then had lunch. Lon was very sweet about saying he was really a Packer fan.
Even though it has been really really really cold here and we are only going to get more, it doesn't matter. The island continues to be beautiful and peaceful and we are so happy.
It is so cold today that when Hawk hung the laundry on the line, it froze. We are expecting it to be in the teens tonight and thirties tomorrow, but we are also getting a "pineapple," which is a nasty warm wet storm from Hawaii. They are predicting a foot of snow. Interesting, given that they have no snowplows on the island...
We went off island to see Rusty and Haley and the new baby. He is very adorable, making sounds and smiling.
We brought him a colorful cow and a book about a garbage truck for Taylor. Taylor gave us both huge hugs before his nap, what a precious boy.
We went and looked at a gorgeous lot yesterday and again today.
